Description

OTEPIC is seeking funds in order to sink a borehole for clean, safe water and provide education and training on all aspects of water hygiene and sanitation, and waste disposal in Sabwani Village, situated in the Rift Valley, Kenya. Clean water for up to 3,000 people and up to an estimated 50% reduction in water borne diseases. (We also expect a reduction in poverty due to reduced family expenditure on medication plus, a noticeable increase in the local economic development, due to the substantial improvement in health).

Our Target: Clean water for up to 3,000 people and up to an estimated 50% reduction in water borne diseases. (We also expect a reduction in poverty due to reduced family expenditure on medication plus, a noticeable increase in the local economic development, due to the substantial improvement in health).

The people benefitting directly from this borehole and associated training are: 3,000 locals, made up of 1,500 children between 1-12 years old, 800 women and 700 men. Plus, another 300 people will benefit indirectly.

The Rift Valley area has long been neglected by government and international relief organisations. It is an area of broken roads, few functioning, clean water sources, high levels of illiteracy and limited access to health services. Even when weather conditions and rainfall levels are ideal, communities struggle to find sufficient quantities of safe drinking water for themselves and their livestock. Widespread poverty and food insecurity are a way of life, rather then an emergency. Most of the Rift Valley area is arid and the major water sources are traditional seasonal rivers, sand and Pam Dams. These water sources are often contaminated, or dry up for long dry spells.

The total project is  20,567 USD

OTEPIC is submitting to COOW to finance 3,000 USD of the total.
